Non-Surgical Management of Kidney Stone with Homoeopathy

Patient Mr.RSB (Patient ID: 52538) requested medical attention after experiencing abdominal pain for more than two months. The 3.5 mm renal calculus (kidney stone) in the left kidney was found to be the source of the pain after investigation. The patient visited the Life Force Chembur clinic on September 15, 2023, for additional evaluation and homoeopathic treatment.  He had taken allopathic medicines for 3-4 days and after Ultrasound (USG) when it was diagnosed as a Kidney stone his doctor had advised him to go ahead with surgery as a course of treatment.

The patient had been suffering from a sharp, prickly pain on the left side of his abdomen. Each episode lasted roughly 10 to 20 minutes and happened once every three to four days. He was seeking a longer-term treatment for his ailment, even though he had been taking Ayurvedic medicine for the previous five days. Although his doctor had recommended surgery as a treatment, the patient was hesitant and not psychologically prepared to proceed with an intrusive procedure. He was eager to find a non-surgical treatment that would eventually reduce his problems. He chose to investigate this alternate route after learning about homeopathy and Life Force's services from a friend who is also a Life Force patient.

- Investigations:

- Date: 06.09.2023

- Ultrasound-abdomen:

- Kidneys are normal in size on the right and left sides. The kidneys have smooth renal margins. Cortical echo texture is normal. Calculus ms 3.5 mm is seen in the mid-pole of the left kidney.

Physical generals: He was vegetarian by diet and had an average appetite. His bowel movements were normal and he didn't have any urinary complaints. He liked spicy and sweets. He perspired normally and had offensive sweat.

Personal details: He was working as strategy head in the share market and was living with his wife who is a homemaker and a 10-month-old baby boy.

Past history:

In the past, he suffered from Pilonidal sinus 2 times and in 2011 was operated on for Hernia.

Family history:

Based on his case details NUX - VOMICA 30 was prescribed to him. The patient was guided with a proper diet to be followed, to avoid spinach, tomatoes, brinjal, okra (bhindi), and beet-root, high protein foods like meat, eggs, and fish. Also, he was advised to drink enough water at least 2-4 litres per day. The patient was guided with the proper prognosis and scope of homeopathic treatment and informed that in follow-up care we will be likely monitoring the progression, dissolution of stone or passage of the stone, managing pain, and implementing strategies to reduce recurrence risk in the future. It was also guided that as per the need, he will be advised to do the Ultrasound (USG) and urine tests.

Follow-ups:

By October 27th, 2023, in his first follow-up, the frequency, duration, and intensity of pain were much better, patient informed of no pain since starting the Homoeopathic treatment. Since he had not repeated the USG it was difficult to compare the size of stones. Based on his symptoms a further prescription was done.

On 8th March 2024, the patient visited for a follow-up with an Ultrasound report:

- Investigations:

- Date: 10.01.2024

- Ultrasound-abdomen:

- Kidneys are normal in size on the right and left sides. The kidneys have smooth renal margins. Cortical echo texture is normal. The central echo complex does not show evidence of calculus or hydronephrosis.

The patient experienced complete relief from pain and the report showed no evidence of stone. The patient was thankful for the treatment provided since his complaints were 100% better and also the stone was dissolved completely without the need for any invasive procedure.

Conclusion:

This case shows when homeopathic treatment is initiated at the right time along with following proper diet and lifestyle measures, remedies can help to treat small kidney stones, alleviate the symptoms, and prevent the chances of recurrence in the future. Also, it is to be noted that for kidney stones that are larger in size > 10 mm or one who has multiple kidney stones in such complex cases, surgery is still necessary.
