Osteoarthritis Complicated by Stubborn Frozen Shoulder in an elderly woman shows 80% Improvement at Life Force
Introduction
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease characterized by the progressive wear and tear of the cartilage, leading to joint pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility. Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition marked by severe restriction of shoulder movement due to inflammation and fibrosis in the shoulder capsule. When both conditions co-occur, it can severely limit the patient's functional independence, especially in elderly individuals. While conventional treatment options for these conditions primarily include anti-inflammatory medications, physiotherapy, and sometimes surgical interventions, their efficacy can vary, and side effects may limit their long-term use. This case study explores the treatment of an elderly woman suffering from both osteoarthritis and a stubborn frozen shoulder, with an 80% improvement in her symptoms through homeopathic treatment.

Case Study
A 69-year-old woman (Patient ID: 53489) visited Life Force Homeopathy, Jayanagar Branch, on 12th January 2024 for osteoarthritis complicated by frozen shoulder symptoms. The primary complaints were pain in the joints (especially the knees, ankles, and back), pain and tenderness in the biceps muscle of the right arm, stiffness in the fingers, numbness in the extremities, and weakness.
The patient was unable to lift her right arm and could not lie on the affected side, as it often aggravated her symptoms. Pain and stiffness in the fingers were worse in the early morning and during cold weather. Pain in the knees was worse when standing for long hours.
The symptoms began in 2023 after a sudden episode of knee locking. The patient had no family history of arthritis and no significant medical conditions in her past. Her current treatment regimen included physiotherapy and the occasional use of NSAIDs (Enzoflam), which she had used twice in the past week for pain relief. She was also taking Vitamin D3 and calcium supplements.
A detailed case history was taken, encompassing both physical and mental generals:
Physical Generals:
The patient followed a vegetarian diet with an average appetite and no specific cravings. She had reduced water intake, drinking only 1.5 litres daily. She experienced minimal sweating and could not tolerate extreme cold weather. Her bowel movements were satisfactory, with no urinary complaints. Her sleep was sound, with no recurrent dreams. She had reached menopause 15 years ago.
Psychological Make-Up: The patient had a happy childhood with a supportive family. Her married life was also satisfactory. However, she experienced deep grief after her husband's death six years ago. She was generally mild-mannered with a calm and composed nature. She enjoyed cooking and gardening. She was introverted and did not wish to share her problems with anyone.
Her intellectual abilities, including memory, intelligence, and perception, were intact. Physical examination revealed normal blood pressure (120/80 mmHg) and a weight of 72 kg. Dr. Shah thoroughly reviewed the patient's case and prescribed appropriate homeopathic remedies, while advising on a diet plan and weight reduction measures. The patient was also encouraged to perform specific exercises and make dietary changes to aid in weight loss.
Follow-Up and Progress:
First Follow-Up (March 3, 2024):
Pain in the knees, ankles, and stiffness in the fingers was slightly improved. However, pain in the right shoulder had increased. The pain was worse with pressure and when lifting her arm.
Second Follow-Up (June 2, 2024):
The patient was overall better regarding joint pain (20-30%). Her main concern was the frozen shoulder, which was not showing satisfactory improvement.
Third Follow-Up (July 27, 2024):
Her main concern was still the frozen shoulder pain, which was worse in the morning upon waking and when moving her arms sideways. The pain improved with complete rest. Stiffness in the fingers was also worse at night. Additionally, there was swelling in the right index finger. All other symptoms were better.
Fourth Follow-Up (September 29, 2024):
Overall, there was a 50% improvement in joint pains. The frozen shoulder pain had improved by 30% but showed no further progress.
Final Follow-Up (December 11, 2024):
After several months of treatment, the patient experienced significant improvement in the frozen shoulder, with shoulder pain reduced by 80%. All other joint pains also improved.
She expressed great satisfaction with the treatment she received at Life Force Homeopathy under Dr. Shah. She was particularly pleased that she no longer needed to take painkillers after starting the homeopathic treatment. The patient continues to be under treatment at Life Force and is hopeful for further stable improvement in her condition.
Conclusion:
Homeopathy proves to be an effective treatment option for chronic conditions like osteoarthritis, especially when conventional treatments may not offer long-term relief. In this case, homeopathy helped slow down the degenerative process of osteoarthritis, providing significant pain relief and improving the patient's joint mobility. Additionally, homeopathic remedies helped avoid the prolonged use of painkillers or steroids. This case highlights the potential of homeopathy in managing complex and chronic musculoskeletal disorders.
